10 things you mightn't know about Central America

They say travel broadens the mind so after almost one month in Central America I thought I should be able to list at least 10 things I´ve learn´t about this corner of the world. Prior to my visit all I knew was that Cancun had an awesome party scene, that and having watched Oliver Stone´s 1986 film `Salvador´. I´m glad to report that the former was an accurate assumption but my experience in El Salvador was nothing like James Woods character in the film.

Here´s 10 things I learnt about Central America:

1. Micheladas are an awesome drink. I can´t believe no one has introduced me to them before now.

2. Belize´s offical language is English.

3. Belize was formerly called British Honduras.

4. The word in Spanish for hot (spicy) isn´t the same as hot (temperature).

5. Rio Dulce in Guatemala is a popular spot for sailing boats to wait out hurricane season.

6. El Salvador´s national currency is the US Dollar.

7. The Madonna song `La Isla Bonita´ was written about San Pedro in Belize.

8. Anthony Bordain is right, street food is the best food.

9. There are buses from Cancun town to the Hotel Zone for a reason, don´t try to walk it in midday sun.

10. If someone warns you a sauce is picante don´t take that as a challenge to down the whole bowl in one gulp.
